The Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association, in cooperation with the American National Standards Institute, has set voluntary weight-limit standards for cabinets. The stamp of approval is awarded to cabinets when they show no sign of visible failure at 600 pounds.
According to the Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association, the weight limit of the average kitchen cabinet is 600 pounds. It sounds like a lot, but keep in mind this is an average for the entire overhead cabinet unit (not per shelf).
Even a cheap kitchen cabinet should hold 30-to-50 pounds with no problems or failure. Purchased cabinets come with stated weight limits. The problem with checking your cabinets to determine their maximum weight load is by the time you determine that maximum weight limit you've weakened the cabinets.
